Waxing Contraindications

Waxing is a wonderful method of hair removal, resulting in longer lasting results in comparison to shaving. However, waxing is also a form of exfoliation, thus can have adverse reactions with clients taking specific medications or applying topical skin care products.

The following skin thinning topicals/medications should be discontinued for a minimum of 5 days prior to receiving a waxing service:

  • Adapalene

  • Alustra (Retin A)

  • Avage

  • Avita (Retin A)

  • Differin

  • Isotretinoin

  • Renova(Retin A)

  • Tazorac

  • Tazarotene

  • Tretinoin(Retin A)

These products make your skin thin and delicate, which could result in the waxing pulling off skin. If you are using Accutane, you must omit use for a minimum of one year before waxing.

If you have recently received a mild chemical peel, microdermabrasion, or an enzyme treatment that had tingling, please wait a minimum of 7 days before receiving a wax.

Topical skincare products (cleansers, toners, masks, serums, treatments) that have:

  • AHAs (Glycolic and/or Lactic)

  • BHAs (Salicilic Acid)

  • Benzoyl Peroxide (proActive)

  • Any bleaching agents for hair (like upper lip) or skin (Hydraquinone, Trilumena)

  • Exfoliation (scrubs, gentle enzymes)

Can increase sensitivity. Skin types with overly sensitive skin should avoid at least 2-3 days before waxing, switching to a gentle cleanse/routine before and after waxing. If you received laser skin resurfacing or a physician administered peel, you must wait at least one year before waxing.

If you recently received a tan (natural or tanning bed) you must wait at least three days before waxing. If you are sunburned, you must wait until your skin is completely healed and back to normal before receiving any waxing.

If you recently received Microblading or Ombre (Permanent Makeup) within the eyebrow or lip area, you must wait 14 days before receiving a wax within that area.

Any contagious skin conditions, including cold sores, must be healed before receiving any wax. This can take anywhere from 7-14 days.

If you are on your menstrual cycle (period), you may have increased skin sensitivity

If you have Varicose veins within the treatment area or if you are Diabetic, you must check with your doctor before receiving any wax. If you have epilepsy, please disclose with me before we start.

Waxing IS safe for those who are pregnant and breastfeeding.

Happy Waxing
